THERE must be a number of Villa supporters who saw who threw the 50p coin that injured the linesman during Saturday’s game with
Portsmouth.
They must come forward now for the good of the club and name and shame this unsavoury individual.
What is really disturbing is that it was thrown from a season ticket and family area of the ground.
However, the cretin who threw it is certainly no Villa supporter, whether he or she has a season ticket or not.
Does this mindless idiot realise what harm has been done to a club that has undertaken so much for its fans in terms of comfort and facilities over the last few years?
Villa have had more national headlines and TV coverage over this incident than they did when they gave away their shirt sponsorship to the Acorns Children’s Hospice charity.
To add to that, Villa may be punished by the FA for this idiot’s stupid and dangerous act.
It’s also a big insult to the great work done by chairman Randy Lerner.
Villa Park is well run and a very safe place to watch a game of
football, which is why it’s one of the 2012 Olympic venues.
Whoever you are, Mr Coin Thrower, let me explain to you that whatever your pea-sized brain is telling you, you are no hero in the eyes of the other 36,599 football supporters who were in the stadium on Saturday.
At times, we all get frustrated and angry with referees, linesmen, players, managers and directors. However, most of us can vent those emotions vocally without the need to throw missiles.
Fortunately, Mr Sharpe was only superficially injured, but that was definitely more by luck than judgment.
On the other side of the supporters’ coin, Villa fanatic Chris Cooper cycled all the way to Paris to raise money for former Villa midfielder Paul Birch, who is battling against cancer.
Chris could have just sat on his backside and donated a few quid to the fund but decided to sit his backside on a bike and ride hundreds of miles to help someone else.
I know which one is a real Villa fan and it certainly isn’t Mr Coin Thrower.
There are hundreds of Villa supporters, as there are at all our local clubs, who do great charitable works, raising much-needed money for deserving causes.
The moron at Villa Park has also done these wonderful fans a great disservice.
I know Villa are desperate to find out who he or she is so that they can ban them for life from Villa Park, while the FA should also ban them for life from every ground in the country.
Villa have been studying video footage but, as I said, someone knows who it is. Do the decent thing for your club and the game and turn them in. I just hope the FA take into account Villa’s good record of crowd safety and don’t punish them.
MY OLD club Boldmere St Michaels celebrates its 125th anniversary this week with a gala dinner at Villa’s Trinity Suite.
Every one of those years has been spent at the same ground in Church Road, Sutton Coldfield.
Not many Premier League or Football League clubs can claim that record.
They have produced players who have made it through to league level, while Simon Webbe, of pop band Blue, also turned out for the Mikes. In a game that’s pre-occupied with money Boldmere, like many other top non-league clubs, are a credit to the game.
